Tie rod assembly is often used to brace heavy timber beams or steel columns or to support awnings and canopies. These rods are also used with turnbuckles and/or clevises. We possess a Tie Rod Calculator that can quickly determine the rod lengths when a tie rod assembly’s overall pin-to-pin dimensions are provided.
Manufacturing
Baseline Bolt manufactures sag rod or tie rod assemblies in a range of ASTM specifications. In general, two common configurations are used. The first configuration comprises of a single rod provided with a left hand thread and right hand thread on both the ends. There is a clevis threaded onto the ends of the rod; and by turning the rod, the assembly can be drawn tight. The second configuration comprises of two rods provided with a turnbuckle right in the middle & clevises on either end. By rotating the turnbuckle, the assembly is drawn tight. Occasionally, coupling nuts or sleeve nuts are used to connect tie rod assemblies.
In general, tie rods are manufactured with low carbon steel; however, it is possible to manufacture higher strength assemblies as well. Alloy or carbon steel tie rod assemblies are generally supplied with either hot tip galvanized or plain finish while stainless steel tie rod assemblies tend to be common as well.
